Work from the Land of the Incas
Remote workers around the globe have a new destination to consider for their office backdrop: the scenic and culturally rich country of Peru. The Peruvian government is rolling out the welcome mat with a new immigration proposal, introducing the Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) to cater to the growing trend of working remotely.
Legislative Update
The DNV comes as an update to Peru’s existing immigration laws, specifically Legislative Decree No. 1582. Though the decree was activated on November 15, the finer details of the visa’s implementation are still under wraps, awaiting further clarification.
Visa Validity and Renewal
Designed with flexibility in mind, the new Digital Nomad Visa is set to be valid for one year, with the option for renewal. The National Superintendence of Migration in Peru will be responsible for issuing these visas.
Conditions of the DNV
While the DNV opens up Peru as a potential workspace for internationals, it comes with a stipulation: holders will not be allowed to engage in locally paid work within the country. The specific eligibility criteria and additional details are yet to be announced.
Strengthening Immigration and Security
The introduction of the DNV is part of a broader initiative to enhance Peru’s immigration system and safeguard the country’s security. It aims to regulate the legal entry of international visitors into the country.
Joining the Global Trend
Peru joins an expanding list of over 50 countries that have already adopted the digital nomad visa, including South American neighbors such as Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, and Uruguay.
This visa type allows internationals to reside in the host country while working for businesses or clients situated elsewhere.
Attracting a Remote Workforce
Peru is set to become a hotspot for digital nomads, with its low cost of living and affordable services outpacing many other countries. Attractions like the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Machu Picchu, add to the country’s allure, promising a unique blend of work and exploration.
Multiple Entry Options
Until the DNV is fully detailed and implemented, internationals will still have various visa options for entering Peru, each tailored to the specific purpose of their visit. With the DNV, Peru is poised to become a premier destination for the remote workforce, combining ancient culture with modern connectivity.
