Canada Updates Its Visa Requirements For Digital Nomads

Last Updated on 30 December 2024
Canada has recently announced updates to its visa requirements for digital nomads, providing new information on the Digital Nomad Visa Program.
The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has unveiled a Tech Talent Strategy aimed at attracting business and skilled talent to the country. As part of this strategy, the IRCC has outlined the conditions that may prevent digital nomads from entering Canada. Let’s take a closer look at these updates.
Employment with a Canadian Company
Digital nomads can only be employed by a Canadian company if they obtain a work permit, which is a different type of visa. This means that in order to work for a Canadian employer, digital nomads will need to apply for a work permit in Canada.
Requirements for a Digital Nomad Visa
To obtain a digital nomad visa, certain requirements must be met. Applicants must:
– Work outside of Canada.
– Have a job that allows them to work remotely.
– Demonstrate sufficient funds to cover their entire six-month stay in Canada.
– Show their connections to Canada by booking accommodation with friends or relatives.
Additionally, digital nomads must convince the immigration officer that they plan to leave Canada when their permitted stay expires.
Duration of Stay in Canada
Digital nomads can relocate to Canada for a maximum of six months at a time. In order to work remotely for an international employer, work as independent contractors, or provide services to clients outside of Canada, they need to have visitor status.
Family Members of Digital Nomads
Family members of digital nomads who wish to work or study in Canada will need to apply for a work permit or study permit. This is necessary for them to engage in employment or educational activities in the country.
Open Work Permit for H-1B Visa Holders
Canada is also promoting labor mobility within North America by introducing an open work permit for holders of H-1B specialty occupation visas in the United States.
This allows individuals with H-1B visas to seek employment opportunities in Canada. The program also extends to the immediate family members of H-1B visa holders.
Selected applicants will receive an open work permit that enables them to work for any employer in Canada for up to three years. Dependents and spouses are also eligible to apply for a work or study permit, as well as a temporary resident visa.
This initiative aims to facilitate the employment of qualified workers in the IT sector in Canada.
These updates to Canada’s visa requirements for digital nomads demonstrate the country’s commitment to attracting talent and promoting labor mobility. With these changes in place, digital nomads now have clearer guidelines and options for working and staying in Canada.
