According to the latest Digital Nomad Statistics, there are currently 35 million digital nomads worldwide, with Americans making up 17.3% of the total. When choosing a location, digital nomads prioritize two key factors: internet speed and the cost of living.
The majority of digital nomads engage in freelancing, online entrepreneurship, blogging, content creation, or other freelance work. On average, digital nomads are 32 years old and highly educated, with 90% of them having a good education. Of this group, 35% are employed, while 46% are self-employed.
The median salary for digital nomads is $85,000, with an average annual salary of $120,512. However, it’s worth noting that nearly half of digital nomads experience a reduction in earnings compared to their previous corporate employment. The average living cost for a digital nomad is $1,724 per month, and 46% of them travel with a budget, while 54% have no budget constraints.
When it comes to travel, digital nomads typically visit 1 to 2 countries annually, with 73% exploring this number. Additionally, 19% of digital nomads venture to 3–4 countries, and 8% are adventurous enough to visit more than 5 countries. Interestingly, approximately 45% of digital nomads prefer working from cafes regularly.

Among American digital nomads, 48% choose to travel abroad, while the remaining 52% stay within national borders. The United States of America is home to the largest percentage of digital nomads, with 48% of them being based in the US. The United Kingdom and Russia are the next two nations with the highest percentage of digital nomads. Other nations contribute to only 1% of the total digital nomad population.
Top Occupations
The top occupations for both men and women in the digital nomad community are software developers (34%), web developers (29%), and startup founders (28%). However, there are some differences when it comes to gender-specific occupations.
For women, the top three occupations are marketers (16%), creative professionals (16%), and startup founders (13%). On the other hand, the least common occupations for both men and women are finance and blogging, each accounting for 7% and 4%, respectively.
Living Cost
Monthly expenses for digital nomads vary, but the primary expenses include lodging ($821), groceries ($336), and eating out ($285). Surprisingly, the phone plan has the lowest cost at just $26.
Preferred Activities
According to Digital Nomad Statistics, hiking (52%) is the most popular activity for both men and women, followed by yoga (45%), fitness (40%), and running (29%). Climbing and diving are the least popular activities among digital nomads.
Age
In terms of age distribution, 47% of digital nomads fall into the 30-39 age range. The next largest age group is 50–59 years old (19%), followed by 40–49 years old (16%), 20–29 years old (14%), 60–69 years old (3%), and 70 years and older (1%).

Popular Cities Visited by Digital Nomads
According to the 2024 Report, the top three cities visited by digital nomads are London, Bangkok, and New York, accounting for 2.4%, 1.94%, and 1.65% of trips, respectively.
